Lisa Rosen (Rosen Technology Resources Inc.): The Rise of ESI - Meta Data and its Myths
Download Lisa Rosen's PPT: Download meta_data.ppt
Highlights:
* Data can be anywhere, including on iPods
* Beware that titles of documents may be misleading or irrelevant.
* Type of document may affect what info you get: PDF, Word doc, etc.
* Even same format may have different info -- e.g., not all PDFs are created with Adobe.
* Metadata (MD) may be stripped. If you get a production w/o metadata, what do you do? Should you be getting it? The answer always is going to be yes. (Unless in Meet & Confer u agree not to exchange MD)
* MD is easily manipulated.
* Is your MD complete? Are you getting all necessary data if you use wizards? Are you getting attachments?
*There is a real danger that info recorded by computer may be inaccurate.
* Be sure to use that is really meant for processing, not just document mgmt software. Or you may miss critical data.
* It is never one-size-fits-all!
* What u think u need and want today will change. it's inevitable.
What does your vendor know (and not know) about MD?
*Does vendor really understand EDD processing?
* If paper is not the same as email, what are the benefits to printing native files?
*Be sure you ask for electronic originals.
* Understanding when MD needs to be specifically preserved and produced is one of the biggest challenges in EDD production.
* It is so easy to change MD.
* Know about hidden files.
*Research service bureaus -- to be sure you are using the right service provider who really understands this.
*Take forensics courses, even if you don't get certified (which can require way too much time and work)
Lisa Rosen's company won the 2005 and 2006 LTN Award for best litigation support service
